Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
At Axolotl Counseling & Neurofeedback, we recognize that OCD and OCRD (Obsessive Compulsive Related Disorders) such as Hoarding Disorder, Trichotillomania (hair-picking disorder) and Excoriation (skin-picking) Disorder can be overwhelming, negatively impacting relationships and overall well-being. Our approach focuses on identifying and addressing underlying brain patterns associated with OCD and OCRD to help individuals regain balance and control.
What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?
OCD is a mental health condition characterized by persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and compulsive behaviors performed to alleviate distress. While everyone experiences unwanted thoughts from time to time, individuals with OCD find these thoughts overwhelming, repetitive, and difficult to ignore. The compulsions that follow can interfere with daily life, making it challenging to focus on work, school, or relationships.
Left untreated, OCD can significantly impact emotional and physical health, leading to increased anxiety, exhaustion, and social withdrawal.
Common Symptoms of OCD
Obsessions: Recurring, unwanted thoughts or fears that cause anxiety or distress.
Common themes include:
Germs & Contamination – Fear of dirt, illness, or unclean environments
Intrusive Thoughts – Disturbing or unwanted ideas about harm, violence, or morality
Perfectionism & Order – An overwhelming need for symmetry, organization, or precision
Religious or Ethical Concerns – Excessive worry about morality, sin, or punishment
Compulsions: Repetitive behaviors performed to neutralize distress
Examples include:
Excessive Handwashing or Cleaning – Repeated sanitizing, scrubbing, or disinfecting
Counting & Repeating – Mentally or physically repeating actions in specific patterns
Checking – Constantly verifying locks, appliances, or personal belongings
Arranging Objects – Fixating on perfect alignment or organization
For many individuals, these compulsions do not provide lasting relief but instead become time-consuming rituals that interfere with daily responsibilities and well-being.
